HBO has unveiled the first trailer for a new documentary from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson focused on the groundbreaking legacy of Earth, Wind & Fire.
Titled “Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s The Weight Of The World),” the film explores the group’s rise from its jazz-inspired beginnings into one of the most influential acts in music history. The documentary, directed and produced by Questlove following his acclaimed Summer of Soul, examines the creative vision of late founder Maurice White and the spiritual ideas that shaped the band’s sound, performances, and message.
The official synopsis states: “Acclaimed producer, director, and musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson tells the story of the legendary nine-time Grammy Award-winning band Earth, Wind & Fire, tracing their genesis through late founding member Maurice White, chronicling their evolution, highs and lows, and relevance from the 1970s into the present day while exploring the deep philosophical and spiritual meaning behind their message and music. Drawing from the band’s rich visual, audio, and written archives, including never-before-seen footage, the film plays like an experiential kaleidoscope of images, colors, and music, transporting viewers to the vibrancy of live performances that have electrified fans past and present.”
The movie revisits the band’s commercial breakthrough in the 1970s, highlighted by hits including “Shining Star,” “Sing a Song,” “September,” and “After the Love Has Gone.” It also looks at the group’s lasting impact on generations of artists through collaborations, sampling, and hip-hop culture. Featured interviews include band members Philip Bailey, Verdine White, and Ralph Johnson, along with appearances from Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, H.E.R., and Flea.
“Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s The Weight Of The World)” will make its world premiere opening the 25th Tribeca Festival on June 3 at the Beacon Theatre, followed by a live performance from Earth, Wind & Fire and The Roots. It will then debut Sunday, June 7 on HBO, and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
