Presidential Preference Voting Date (Georgia)

From the Office of Elections & Registration:

Due to recent developments around the spread of COVID-19, the state of Georgia has postponed the March 24 Presidential Preference Primary until May 19. We will provide additional information about this election in April.

Update: March 19, 2020

The Presidential Preference Primary (PPP) and Special Election has been moved from 03/24/2020 to be held in conjunction with the 05/19/2020 General Primary and Nonpartisan General Election.  These elections will be combined.  Ballots that have been cast for the PPP will be counted.  The PPP has not been cancelled.  In-person voting for the PPP was suspended on 03/15/2020 and will resume on 04/27/2020, in conjunction with the 05/19/2020 General Primary.

Defined Terms:

PPP Ballot– A ballot that contains only the Presidential Preference Primary and Special Elections (In our case, the ESPLOST ) planned to be held in conjunction with the PPP on 03/24/2020.

May Ballot– A ballot that contains only the ballot choices originally scheduled to be conducted on 05/19/2020.

Combined Ballot– A ballot that contains both the PPP Ballot and the May Ballot.

Voter registration will open back up beginning on Monday 03/23/2020 and will remain open through 04/20/2020.  04/20/2020 is the deadline to register to vote and be eligible to vote in May for the combined General Primary/Nonpartisan General Election/Presidential Preference Primary. Any voter registration applications we’ve received since 02/25/2020 and through 04/20/2020 will be processed for registration, and those voters will be eligible to vote in both elections in May.

We will continue to process applications and mail absentee ballots for all applications received and clearly dated 03/24/2020 for the PPP through Friday, 03/20/2020.  We will begin to mail the May Ballots and the Combined Ballots on 03/31/2020 for the Combined Election and the General Primary/Nonpartisan Election.

Voters who did not participate in the 03/24/2020 PPP will receive a Combined Ballot.  Only one party may be selected, and all choices on the ballot received by the voter will be of the same party (plus the non-partisan races).

Voters who did participate in the PPP who request a ballot for the May election will receive a ballot style that includes all of the races originally scheduled for May, and will not include the PPP choices. These voters can choose to receive a Democratic, Nonpartisan or Republican ballot.

Rollover voters (elderly and disabled voters who have requested to receive all ballots for the whole election season) will continue to receive ballots for the party preference indicated on their original application unless they express, in writing, a different party preference for the May elections.

Voters who requested an absentee ballot by mail for the 03/24/2020 PPP but have not returned the ballot when they attempt to vote again:

Advanced In-person – the outstanding ballot will be cancelled and the voter will be issued a combined ballot at the early voting site.

Absentee by Mail – The outstanding absentee ballot will be cancelled and the voter will be issued a combined absentee by mail ballot.

Election Day – The voter will be required to complete an affidavit to cancel their absentee by mail ballot, and will be allowed to cast a combined ballot.

PPP ballots issued before the 03/20/2020 deadline can be accepted until the new PPP election date of 05/19/23020. The provisional ballots issued under the 03/24/2020 and 05/19/2020 elections will conclude on 05/22/2020. UOCAVA (Uniformed Overseas Citizen Absentee Voting Act) ballots postmarked by 05/19/2020 can be accepted through 05/22/2020.
